“Jane: An Abortion Service” Community Screening at Guilford College

The Spectrum Doula Collective and Guilford’s Sexual Assault Awareness, Support, and Advocacy group will be hosting a screening of the documentary “Jane: An Abortion Service” on Wednesday November 14th at 7pm, in the Bryan Jr. Auditorium.

Jane: An Abortion Service was a Sundance Film Festival Selection, and is a fascinating documentary about a secret, women-run abortion service that flourished in the midwest in the late ’60s and early ’70s during a time of illegal, and often deadly abortions. The film was produced and directed by Kate Kirtz and Nell Lundy.

This event is free and open to the public.

Spectrum’s 2nd Annual Anti-Valentines Benefit Pie Auction

We had such a blast last year that we’re bringing it back!
Here’s how it works:
You bring a delicious pie.* We auction it off. The winner of the pie also wins a BLIND DATE (!) with the person who made it. Dates can be platonic or romantic as noted by the pie-maker. Pie-makers can also simply auction a pie and not a date. There is NO COVER so you can come planning to buy a pie and help us raise money for the Spectrum Doula Collective!

AND!
dance party

AND!
a kissing booth

AND!
sweet treats and crafty awesomeness for sale made with love by the Spectrum Doula Collective

*please make sure to label your pie and include ingredients! and if you don’t deem yourself a pie-maker, you sure can be a pie buyer and eater!
*you can also donate a pie if you don’t want the blind date, but really, what’s the fun in that??

The Spectrum Doula Collective Is Recruiting

We have come to a point where our collective needs to expand. We are looking for new people to join us in supporting the pregnant people of the Piedmont. With all of the abortion bills being passed in the last few weeks, now more than ever we need to focus on providing the compassionate care people deserve. If you’re looking for a meaningful way to be involved please fill out the following questionnaire and email us with your responses and we will be in touch with you.

We are currently working on a curriculum and will be offering a training for new volunteers sometime in October. Because of this we ask that new volunteers have their applications in by September 16th to allow time for last minute interviews before training. No prior experience in pregnancy/health care is necessary, but a commitment to reproductive justice is.

Application For Spectrum Volunteers

1. Please list any prior experience in pregnancy, sexual health, reproductive justice, etc. you may have had.

2. What is your experience with abortion or abortion support? What has been the impact of those experiences?

3. Do you have any experience working with collective process?

4. What is your main reason for wanting to volunteer with the Spectrum Doula Collective?

5. How did you hear about us?

6. What level of commitment to the project are you interested in/what is your availability?

7. What areas of volunteering are you interested in (birth, abortion, adoption, postpartum, fundraising, publicity, etc.)

8. Are you able to travel to provide care? How far?

9. How can we best get in touch with you?

Officially Trained!!!

It’s been awhile since we’ve last posted, but a lot of exciting updates have been brewing in the meantime. We finally had The Doula Project from NYC come down and train us. We’re now up and running thanks to all the generous support from everyone who came out and made the pie auction so awesome. The amount of support we got was astounding. We’re all really excited to start doing the work we’ve been planning for so long.
We’re currently getting our ducks in a row so that we can start holding our own trainings for folks who are interested in becoming full-spectrum doulas. We’ve also been making some awesome care packages for folks who are are opting for medical (by pill) abortions at home. Also in the works, a new updated website, fancy pants business cards, a phone hotline and much more. Stay tuned!
